  • Reimagining Weddings: How The Real Florists loves Connection and Authenticity

I love what I do. I really do. And if you know me, you know I LOVE love. That’s why over the last 16 years I have loved being a wedding florist! Truly. The excitement. The giddy planning. The dreaming. The building of something that exists for one day, but is remembered forever. When I looked at the numbers of doing between 30-40 weddings a year, add in a year where my incredible team took on 52 weddings, and we’re sitting at well over 609 love stories we have been trusted with. That’s huge. That’s an honour. What I loved most wasn’t the scale or the styling trends. It was the connection. Getting to know couples. Hearing how they met. Watching them grow. Seeing them again a year out and on a special occasion, following along with their careers, families, and new chapters.  That part has always felt like magic. But if I’m being REAL with you… Over the last few years, I started to fall out of love with weddings. Not love itself. Not floristry. Burnout. The kind that sneaks up quietly. That you don’t realise how far past it you are until you’re already exhausted. As demand grew, so did the workload. And when the workload increases, something always has to give. I found myself in consultations with couples and realising I had no recollection of who they were. If you know me, you know that is not me. Connection is my core value. It sits at the centre of everything I do. When you’re a single mum, running two businesses, and weddings essentially become a third business of their own, something has to pause. It couldn’t be my everyday floristry. It couldn’t be my family. (Although, with hindsight, if you’re a mum working late most Thursdays and Fridays, and almost every weekend for your children’s entire lives… they have missed out in ways you don’t always see in the moment.) That realisation hits hard. So mid last year, I pressed pause on weddings altogether! I know there were beautiful couples who were disappointed. Couples I would have loved to work with. When your vision isn’t clear and you’re operating in overwhelm, that’s when the wheels start to wobble, any business owner knows that’s the danger zone. I’ve worked far too hard to let that happen now. That pause gave me exactly what I needed. Time. Clarity . Perspective. So here ’s what’s changing: Going forward, we will be taking MAXIMUM of two weddings per month. and it is first in best bloomed (see what I did there)  I’m throwing the question “what’s your budget?” out the bloody window. I truly don’t care!!  What I do want to know is: Who are you? What’s your love story? How can I best serve you on your day? I still love love. I always will. But now, I want my work to be full of purpose and meaning again. I want to know you. To connect deeply. To create with intention. Because my absolute favourite part of the last 16 years hasn’t been the flowers themselves. It’s been watching our couples’ lives change and grow, and getting to be a small part of that journey. That… is the REAL magic.

As the event season approaches, it's time to start thinking about how to make your gatherings truly unforgettable. Whether you're planning a wedding, corporate function, birthday celebration, or any other special occasion, incorporating flowers into your event can transform it from ordinary to extraordinary. At The Real Florist, we're here to share why flowers should be a key element in your event planning and how they can elevate your experience. 1. Set the Perfect Ambiance Flowers have an incredible ability to set the mood and create a welcoming atmosphere. From the soft elegance of roses to the vibrant energy of sunflowers, each bloom can evoke different emotions and themes. Imagine walking into a venue adorned with lush floral arrangements that perfectly complement your event's theme—it's an experience that will leave a lasting impression on your guests. 2. Whether it's a bouquet for the bride, a centerpiece for the dinner table, or floral decorations for the venue, flowers can make your memories even more special. 4. Freshen Up the Space A well-chosen selection of flowers can bring freshness and vitality to any event space. They add a natural element that contrasts beautifully with modern decor and can even help to mask any less desirable odors (carpet after a few too many dance floors spills). Fresh flowers create a sense of renewal and can make any venue feel more inviting and vibrant. 5. Create a Sensory Experience Flowers are not only visually stunning but also aromatic. The gentle fragrance of fresh blooms can enhance the sensory experience of your event, adding another layer of enjoyment for your guests. Imagine a venue filled with the delicate scent of lilies or the sweet aroma of peonies—it's an experience that goes beyond the visual. 6. Symbolize Meaningful Moments Different flowers have various meanings and symbolisms, and incorporating them into your event can add a layer of significance. • Floristry is art, but it is also a business!

Our Luxe Mother's Day arrangement was a HIT!! BUT...Was it profitable? Mother's Day is one of the biggest events on a florist’s calendar. The shop is buzzing, orders are flying in, and emotions are high, but once the last bouquet has been delivered and the petals settle, there’s one crucial task left: Review your numbers. As tempting as it is to breathe a sigh of relief and move on, this is the most important time to stop, reflect, and document EVERYTHING while it’s still fresh in your mind. Here’s why it matters : When you take the time to evaluate what worked (and what didn’t), you’re setting yourself up for a smoother, smarter, and more profitable Mother’s Day next year. The notes and insights you capture now will become your roadmap for success. What you should be recording : Best sellers:  What products flew out the door? Slow movers:  What didn’t sell as well as expected? Profit margins:  Which products or packages gave you the best return? Sales performance:  Did you hit your goals or fall short? Calculate the percentage increase or decrease  in sales compared to last year. Team feedback:  Was your staffing level right for the workload? Marketing performance:  What strategies drove orders—email marketing, social posts, local ads? Customer feedback:  Were there any common praises or complaints? Operational wins and challenges:  What processes worked well? Where were the bottlenecks? Set KPIs ( Key Performance Indicators ) for next year Once you have all this information, use it to set meaningful goals for next year: Revenue targets Profit percentage goals Stock and supply ordering limits Turnaround times for pre-orders and delivery Customer satisfaction benchmarks By setting these KPIs NOW , you’re not only building a stronger business, you’re saving yourself time, stress, and money in the future. Final Thought: Floristry is creative, emotional, and joyful—but it’s also a business . The more data you collect and analyse, the more confidently you can make decisions. So take an hour. Grab your laptop (and maybe a leftover sweet treat from the weekend), and start!! Next Mother’s Day, you’ll be so grateful you did! • The hypocritical language of Sustainable Floristry

I Feel hypocritical with the Language of Sustainable Floristry ...but we're trying our best (and getting better every day). Let’s be REAL for a second — using words like sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly in the world of floristry can feel... a little sticky. On one hand, we love nature! We literally work with flowers every day. But on the other hand? The floristry industry can be surprisingly unsustainable. Imported flowers. Plastic wrap. Foam that lives longer than we do.... Yikes . So yeah, sometimes I feel a bit hypocritical throwing around the word “sustainability.” But here’s the thing: We do care . A lot . And we’re making conscious choices to move in the right direction — even when it's not the easiest, cheapest, or most convenient path. At The Real Florist, we're approaching sustainability from three angles: 1. Environmental Sustainability We’re cutting back on plastic, using the plastics out flowers are delivered in as repackage. We are rethinking our materials, choosing vases with natural stems over foam-based arrangements, buying local blooms whenever we can. Teaching foam free alternatives with our educational courses. Foam free installation made by The Real Florist Intermediate Floristry Course students. 📷 @rachelemmilly Is it perfect? Nope. But is it better than doing nothing? Absolutely. 2. Ethical Sustainability We want to know who grew our flowers, how they were treated, and whether they were paid fairly. We’re choosing suppliers and growers who share those values — even if it means saying no to cheaper options. 3. Economical Sustainability Let’s not sugarcoat it — doing the right thing can cost more. And we’re a small business trying to keep the lights on and our flowers cold. We’re finding ways to make ethical choices that also allow us to stay in business and support our team. It’s Not About Perfection — It’s About Progress We choose ethics over convenience as often as we can. We reuse. We recycle. We talk to our growers. We offer sustainable alternatives to our community like our Nude Blooms -the option for unwrapped flowers with a DISCOUNT #NUDEBOOMS for being a reduce, reuse, recycle legend, locally grown Market Bunches or foam free installations at our weddings. Foam free wedding of Caitlin and James using reused milk creates and chicken wire But let's be honest, we haven’t figured it all out yet. Because sustainability isn’t a destination — it’s a direction. So yes, sometimes we feel a bit hypocritical using the “ s-word .” But we’d rather be awkwardly honest about it than greenwash our way through it. Thanks for sticking with us, cheering us on, and choosing and trusting us at The Real Florist whist we design your flowers with our best conscience in mind flower lovers. Custom designed foam free arrangements by 'The Real Florist Albury'

  • Do I need Roses for Valentines Day?

Traditionally, the red rose has a very clear meaning, it says loud and clear “I love You”. Red roses have been the symbol of love since ancient times—way before Tinder was a thing! In ancient Rome, lovers would exchange roses to express their affection, probably because, and lets be honest, they probably were not really looking for a lover full of personality lol. According to legend, the first red rose grew from the blood of Venus, the goddess of love. Talk about a dramatic backstory! Roses are  the original and most popular choice of flower for Valentine’s day. If you want to tell someone you love them, a red rose usually does the trick. So do you need Red Roses this Valentine's Day? In our humble florist opinion, the answer is a resounding NO! Unless, of course, you want to be just like every other love-struck Romeo out there. Who wants to blend in with the crowd when you can stand out like a flamingo at a penguin party? Your lover wants to know that you know them, like, A modern arrangement of deep reds, maroon, and pink seasonal flowers will tell your lover that you're thinking of them—and that you have a flair for the dramatic! Plus, a locally made gifts and most definitely a sweet treat with a personalized card message can fill in the blanks. Just remember, “I love you” is great, but “I love you more than pasta” might just seal the deal! Flowers can deliver so many different messages: "I love you as much as pasta" "Meow, purr purr, meow." "Let put our TULIPS together" "You give me butterflies and boners" " Happy V Day. P.S - your V makes my D happy." Pre-orders are now open for Valentine's Day via our beautiful website. Get your orders in NOW ! You can now place pre-orders for Valentine's Day on our stunning website! • RESILIANCE in small business

If you are a small business owner, or have worked in a small business, I am sure you can agree that the environment was DIFFICULT in 2024! Inflation pressures, changes in consumer spendings, supply changes and disruptions, labour shortages and the inefficiencies of higher wage costs vs employee competence, all contributed to a year full of trials and tribulations in the retail world. Notably so, as a floristry business owner, where logistics and minimal profit margins are always a challenging part of running a successful business, 2024 was a struggle!! However, the businesses that survived and thrived all had a particular skill set in common, RESILIENCE  But what does RESILIANCE in business even mean? Well, Resilience means embracing failure as part of the journey, not as the end. It means learning from tough times, staying focused on our goals, and finding innovative ways to move forward. Every challenge we face is an opportunity to grow stronger, wiser, and more determined.   Now I am sorry if you are offended by curse words... however, this florist mumma is a bit of a potty mouth, I am about to use a big bad one, the "C" word.... COVID!! As a business owner or employee did you have to or choose to pivot your business, your ambitions or your dreams in COVID???  Well, do you know what that took? It took a hell of a lot of RESILIANCE!! Although through some gritted teeth and most definitely alot of tears we all proved to ourselves how strong and resiliant we really are. As business owners, we often face unique challenges. However, for me personally and alot of the business owners I am lucky to be surrounded and supported by, the life of women in business can be particularly challenging!! From balancing family responsibilities to breaking through barriers in male-dominated industries, our road is rarely easy but resilience really is our super power.  Since COVID there has been a 24% rise of women directors, founders, co-founders, managers and just general kick ass passionate women, and that is three times the amount of our beautiful (however generally speaking, differently experienced) counterparts 😉 Women standing up to do what we really love, in my experience, are the heart centre of the business community. #yeahthegirls 💪🏼 In small business, the challenges may seem overwhelming at times, but with resilience, we turn obstacles into stepping stones. To stay resiliant in these trying times, we need to learn to lean on the controllables within our own individual frameworks. And once we feel back in control, we lean back out because outside of our framework, that is where the real magic and GROWTH really does happen!!  It is normal to sometimes feel out of control, stuck and defeated in business, but by grounding ourselves and leaning into our RESILIANCE we become not just survivors but leaders, we inspire others to push through their own difficulties and WE create OUR OWN path to success. So, let’s continue to support and empower one another, knowing that with resilience, there is no limit to what we can achieve in 2025 and beyond. The team at The Real Florist looks forward to doing it with all of you! 💐❤️ #resilianceinbusiness #smallbusiness #floristry #floristrybusiness #floristcoach

  • How to get the most out of your flower budget

How to get the most out of your flower budget If you're looking to make the most out of your flower budget, there are several tips and tricks you can use to get the most bang for your buck.  Here are our top suggestions: Shop in season : Flowers that are in season are generally less expensive and easier to find. Do some research on what flowers are in season during the time you need them and choose those, or be directed by your florist, have a concept in mind and let them direct you to the best flower choices to match your concept. Don't overlook foliage : Adding foliage to your floral arrangements can help fill them out and make them look fuller. Look for inexpensive greenery options like eucalyptus or Italian ruscus. Consider non-traditional flowers : Instead of going for the classic roses or lilies, consider using non-traditional flowers like wildflowers or succulents. These can often be less expensive and add a unique touch to your arrangements. Use flowers as dual-purpose decor : If you're using flowers at your ceremony, for example an arbor piece, consider using those flowers as reception decor as well. Assign someone the job of moving your flowers from the ceremony to the reception Repurpose flowers : After your wedding day, gift your flowers to the Mother of the Groom, Mother of the Bride and other significant guests as a special gift or dry them out for a long-lasting display in your home. Shop around and do your research : Don't be afraid to compare prices at different florists. Do not ask florists to compete against others' quotes, but don't be afraid to do your research, compare the pricing and make your own decisions. Make your own bouquets : maybe your florist of choice offers a Bridal Bouquet Arranging workshop, like The Real Florist Bouquet Class. Gather your bride tribe, break open the bubbly and be guided by a qualified florist to create your own bridal bouquet. Ready to talk all things wedding, budget and flowers - get in touch today to meet with The Real Florist Wedding Consultant.
